This itinerary offers 3 variations with panoramic views of the Valais, Vaud, and Haute Savoie Alps and the chance to stop for a delicious pick-me-up at Chalet Chanso along the way!
Start near the church in Morgins’ village centre, passing behind the Chez Jan hotel. Take the road to the right of the bakery to Sépaz (about 20 minutes). The snowshoe trail begins just below the antenna tower. At first, you’ll follow the yellow snowshoe signs marked ‘Morgins-Portes de Culet’. After passing the antenna tower, turn right and follow the green snowshoe signs marked ‘Sépaz-Ferrage-Chanso’. The trail follows the edge of the forest then heads toward Les Troncs and the Ferrage alpine restaurant (closed in winter). Walk along the road for a few meters then turn back across the field to the Chalet Chanso restaurant .
Climb the path above to the Chanso pasture until the farm of the Alp Chanso. From here, choose between 3 variations:
– Option 1, the most challenging: (#21 on the map):
Follow the red signs on your right marked ‘Chanso-La Chaux’ to see exceptional panoramas of the Dents du Midi and the Vaud and Valais Alps. At La Chaux, follow the green signs marked ‘La Chaux-Portes de Culet’, passing below the Pointe de Bellevue (don’t go up). Walk under the Culet pasture and then return to Morgins following the yellow signs marked ‘Portes de Culet-Morgins’.
Tour: 5h, 12.6 km, + 792m.
Don’t take this itinerary if there is any avalanche danger announced.
– Option 2, some altitude gain: (#21B on the map):
Turn left and walk along the flat summer road, following the red signs at first. This variant then heads up towards La Chaux following the green signs marked ‘Tovares-La Chaux-Portes de Culet’.
Return to Morgins following the yellow signs marked ‘Portes de Culet-Morgins’.
Tour: 4h15, 10.6 km, + 694m.
Don’t take this itinerary if there is any avalanche danger announced.
– Option 3, the easiest: (#21A on the map):
Turn left and walk along the flat summer road first following the red signs and then the green signs marked ‘Portes de Culet-La Chaux-Tovares’.
Return to Morgins following the yellow signs marked ‘Portes de Culet-Morgins’.
Tour: 3h45, 10.2 km, + 567m.
Parking in Morgins village centre.
Morgins’ snowshoe trails are marked with round signs in different colours, named by section according to the start and end of the trail segment. The snowshoe trails do NOT show the same numbers used on the Winter Sports Map.
Caution:
Do not walk beyond the avalanche warning sign. Please follow the markings and do not approach the ridge due to the avalanche risk and breakable ledges.
This itinerary does not connect with the Pointe de Bellevue (avalanche danger from La Chaux-Chanso; in winter, the Pointe de Bellevue summit is only accessible from the Col Portes de Culet – see itinerary #23)
