This family-friendly ramble will take you past several small stone monuments, like miniature chapels, which were built by our ancestors to implore Divine protection, or in fulfilment of a vow.
Leaving from the Champéry bell tower, head down the Rue du Village towards the Hôtel Le White, passing the Croix de Broisin on the way. Continuing on the Route de Chavalet, you will see the picturesque Chapelle de Chavalet and, further on, the imposing Croix du Calvaire, erected in memory of the victims of the plague that struck the valley at the beginning of the 17th century.
Taking the path that crosses the Route de la Vallée, you will descend towards the place called ‘Play’ on the outskirts of the village of Val-d’Illiez. Here you will find the Cross de Mission and the Oratoire de Play (200m further on).
From here, retrace your steps to the cross; then, at the fork in the road, head towards the Vièze River, where you’ll find the Oratoire de Bêtre. Continue on along the river, crossing over to the other side on the lovely stone bridge at ‘Sous Scex’. Follow the pedestrian signs for Champéry, which will take you over the river once again and back up to Champéry, passing by the Oratoire des Croix on the way. After crossing the main road, you’ll take the Route des Ravines past the Oratoire des Ravines.
For a longer hike: At the fork in the path after the Croix du Calvaire, a 1h30 detour will take you up to the Oratoire Sur Cou, and the Cantine Sur Coux alpine restaurant, just in time for a delicious refreshment stop! From here, head back down the same way you came to continue your walk towards Play.
