Lovely loop from Champery, passing through Les Crosets and the mythical Croix de Culet.
From the arrival station of the Champéry-Croix de Culet cable car, take a moment to admire the view of the Portes du Soleil area, with the Pointe de Ripaille in the foreground and the Dents Blanches in the background. Immediately turn left and descend between the cable car station and the Planachaux chairlift. Descending between the chalets on this slope, the path then passes between the 2 stations of the Planachaux and Grand-Paradis lifts, before plunging into the forest. In places, you have spectacular views of the Pas d’Encel and the Ruan glacier between the Dents du Midi massif and the Dents Blanches. The trail continues between alpine pastures and forests, then reaches asphalt for 1km. Leave the road at a bend, on a fairly flat forest path. You’re now in the Ayerne sector, at the foot of the steep slopes of the Croix de Culet, overlooking the village of Champéry and offering a new view of the Dents du Midi. After another stretch on the tarmac road, you pass the Cantine Sur Cou and take the gravel path ahead of you around the bend. This path crosses the Malatry forest; watch out for vehicles and bicycles which also use this passage! Go back up the road, which is once again tarmac, for around 300m, then turn left to pass behind a chalet and continue on a dirt track through a forest with a small stream before climbing up to the road to Les Crosets. At the crossroads, turn left onto the road. As soon as you enter the resort, turn left to start the path over the Marcheuson cliff. Once you’ve reached the top of the Marcheuson ski lift, you’ll see the summit of Planachaux.
